Tall Douglas fir and Scots pine on the Haldon ridge, south of Exeter. The stand is part of a managed regeneration area — guests help fund the native broadleaf replanting programme along the clearing edge. Sea mist reaches the site on still mornings. Dartmoor visible on the western horizon from the deck.
Haldon Stand — FAQ
How accessible is Haldon Stand year-round?+
The most accessible site in the network. Firm forestry track with a stable base, suitable in all but the worst weather. Most capable 4WDs and high-clearance AWDs will manage.
Can I see the sea or Dartmoor from the site?+
Dartmoor is visible to the west on clear days from the deck. The sea is not directly in view but reaches the site as mist on still mornings — Lyme Bay is 12 miles south.
What conservation work happens here?+
Haldon Stand sits inside an active managed regeneration area. Guest contributions fund the native broadleaf replanting programme along the clearing edge, replacing commercial conifer with oak, beech and rowan.
What is there to do nearby?+
Haldon Forest Park trails and the Haldon Belvedere are walking distance. Exeter is a 15-minute drive. The South Devon coast — Dawlish, Teignmouth, Exmouth — is within 25 minutes for a coastal day out.
Is there mobile signal or WiFi?+
No WiFi is provided and mobile signal is unreliable to non-existent at every Otium site. We treat the absence of signal as part of the experience. Download maps and any reading material before you set off.
Are dogs allowed?+
Not at present. Several of our sites sit inside National Nature Reserve buffer zones, ancient woodland or active conservation areas where ground-nesting birds and small mammals would be disturbed. We may revisit this as the network grows.
How does my booking fund conservation work?+
A portion of every stay is ring-fenced for the specific site you book. Funds go toward native broadleaf planting, ancient-woodland surveying, invasive species removal and access-track maintenance — work carried out by our conservation partners on the land you sleep on.
