Brecon Hollow

Highland woodland on the northern edge of the Brecon Beacons. The clearing sits at 380 metres — high enough that the weather moves differently here. Cloud comes in fast from the west. When it clears, the Beacons are visible from the deck.

Common Questions

Brecon Hollow — FAQ

How exposed is Brecon Hollow in bad weather?+

Very. The clearing sits at 380 metres on the northern flank of the Brecon Beacons. Cloud and rain move in fast from the west. The approach track is steep and exposed — we strongly recommend genuine 4WD with high clearance, year-round.

Is it good for stargazing?+

The Brecon Beacons is the largest dark-sky reserve in Wales. On clear nights the view from the deck is excellent — Bortle 3 to 4. Galloway and Kielder are darker still, but Brecon is the most accessible dark-sky site for guests coming from southern England.

What hiking is near the site?+

Pen y Fan, Corn Du and the Beacons Way are all within a 20-minute drive. The site itself has direct walking access onto the open hill via a public bridleway — leave the deck, walk for an hour, see no one.

Are there any local pubs or food spots?+

Brecon (11 miles) has good independent food. The Felin Fach Griffin and the Bell at Talybont are both within a 25-minute drive and worth booking ahead.

Is there mobile signal or WiFi?+

No WiFi is provided and mobile signal is unreliable to non-existent at every Otium site. We treat the absence of signal as part of the experience. Download maps and any reading material before you set off.

Are dogs allowed?+

Not at present. Several of our sites sit inside National Nature Reserve buffer zones, ancient woodland or active conservation areas where ground-nesting birds and small mammals would be disturbed. We may revisit this as the network grows.

How does my booking fund conservation work?+

A portion of every stay is ring-fenced for the specific site you book. Funds go toward native broadleaf planting, ancient-woodland surveying, invasive species removal and access-track maintenance — work carried out by our conservation partners on the land you sleep on.
